  3. Vmware Converter Unable To Obtain Hardware Information Hyper-v

I have created a custom role similar to the Virtual Machine Power User (sample) and want to allow the role to export the virtual machines via VMware Converter Standalone but they are receiving 'unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine'. A full administrator role does not have the error so I am thinking that there is a permission error.

My custom role has the same permissions outlined in this VMware KB article but the error continues.

  • Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine. Workaround: Map the network shared folder to the machine where Converter Standalone runs, and select the source from there. Converter Standalone cannot detect the power state of VMware Workstation or other VMware hosted source virtual machines if they are located on a read-only.
  • Unable to obtain hardware information for the selected machine There are some reports about issues with the newest Standalone Converter. Try using version 4.3 instead of 5.0.

Right click and run the standalone convertor as Administrator and/or Install the latest version of standalone convertor. The version that worked for me was 6.1.1 build

As you can see from the logs, i was using an user named Bogdan, (which has Administrator privileges).
The solution for me, was to use the built-in Administrator account for the Windows 2008 Server in the VMWare converter.
